Well, it's an equal ninth place, some points on the table and some loose change in the back pocket for Jordy. While he surfed a great contest, he came up against a rampaging Bede Durbridge and was eliminated in round 4.

"Not the best start to the year, but definitely not the worst start either," said Jordy down the wire soon after his heat, which is as succinct as it comes.

The next event is the Rip Curl Bells Beach Pro, and it begins on 7 April. Once again Jordy was slightly reluctant on revealing too much about his strategy at this stage of the year.

"I've said it before, and nothing has changed. It's just going to be heat-by-heat throughout this year. That is my approach."
